All you need to know about Lee Die Sets
The Lee reloading business began in the home workshop of Richard Lee in 1958 with the invention of the famous Lee Loader for shotgun shells. Lee Loaders, for rifle and pistol ammunition, were invented in the early sixties. These highly effective and economical tools introduced over one and a half million shooters to reloading.
In the 80’s saw new innovations within the Lee reloading product range and Lee’s huge following of reloads enthusiastically upgraded to new Lee presses and dies. Many owners of other brands of dies and presses were easily won over because of the innovative features offered only by Lee. During this period, tens of thousands' of reloaders enjoyed the speed and fun of reloading with the Lee Turret Press and the most popular of all progressive presses the Lee Pro 1000.
Initially, every Lee product is distinctly different from products offered by other companies. Soon however, other companies imitated their inventions and offer products almost as good, but at higher prices. Dies, presses, crimpers, powder measures, priming tools, scales, bullet molds, melters, bullet sizers, lubricants, turrets, trimmers and many accessories are all inventions introduced by Lee and copied by others.
The Lee Die product range continues to grow and offers a variety of choice and calibre offering for those new to reloading and well as the experienced reloading a solid range and values for money. We regularly get asked about the difference between the die set that Lee offers, so I thought I’d but a summary together. I’ll also do a piece shortly on the single dies in the range. So, I’ve split this into Rifle and Pistol Die to make it a little easier to cover. Let’s go!
Rifle Dies
Pacesetter 3-Die Set - https://www.ozgunmart.com.au/?rf=kw&kw=Pacesetter+3-Die+Set
Use these dies if you want to produce factory-dimensioned ammo that reliably fits and feeds in any gun. They are the first choice for semi-auto actions. Full-length sizing is a must if you are reloading for more than one firearm or reloading cases that were fired in other firearms. Includes a full-length sizing die, bullet seating die, factory crimp die, shell holder, powder dipper and load data.
This set is recommended for assembling ammunition for hunting purposes as the finished rounds chamber easily and can withstand rough handling of the firearm action.
Pacesetter 2-Die Set - https://www.ozgunmart.com.au/?kw=Pacesetter%202Die%20Set&pgnum=1&rf=kw
Same as above, but production quantities are lower. This set consists of a two die set which includes a full length steel sizing die (requires case lubrication), bullet seating die, shell holder, powder dipper and load data.
Ultimate Rifle 4-Die Set - https://www.ozgunmart.com.au/?rf=kw&kw=Ultimate+Rifle+Die+Set
Includes both the full-length sizing die (requires case lubrication) and Collet neck sizing die, easy adjust dead length bullet seating die, Factory Crimp Die, shell holder, powder dipper and load data.
This is essentially a Collet die set with the addition of the steel full length sizing die and factory crimp die so that one can prepare newly acquired cases for the first firing in the rifle.
RGB 2-Die Set (Really Great Buy) - https://www.ozgunmart.com.au/lee-rgb-2-die-set-6.5-creedmoor-91556
Comes as a standard two die rifle set that contains a full-length sizing die and a bullet seater die. This set is designed to meet a tight budget and contains only the dies.
Pistol Dies
Handgun/Pistol Carbide 3-Die set - https://www.ozgunmart.com.au/?rf=kw&kw=Carbide+3-Die+set
Carbide handgun dies contain the carbide sizer, the powder through expanding die, the seater/crimping die, a powder dipper, shell holder and load data. The seater/crimper die applies a modified taper crimp and eventually a roll crimp negating the need for a separate taper crimp die.
Lee Deluxe Pistol Die Set - https://www.ozgunmart.com.au/lee-deluxe-carbide-4-die-set
Includes our popular three die carbide handgun die set explained above plus the addition of our Lee Carbide Factory Crimp Die. This additional die has a carbide ring that post sizes your case ensuring that your loaded cartridge will fit into the chamber of your gun. Additionally, the degree of crimp is determined by the finger adjustable crimp knob on top of the die. This die is meant to work in conjunction with your bullet seating die as it has no provision for seating the bullet itself.
